Wang Xiliang, ancestral home in Yi County, Anhui Province, was born in Jingdezhen , Jiangxi Province in February 1922. He is a master of Chinese arts and crafts and a master of Chinese ceramic art. His family was poor when he was young. He dropped out of school at the age of 12 and learned porcelain painting with his uncle Wang Dafan, one of the "eight friends of Zhushan " and a famous ceramic art master in Jingdezhen.



As one of the first batch of ceramic artists and Chinese Ceramic Art Masters inJingdezhen, and the winner of lifetime achievement award by China Light Industry Union, Wang Xiliang is honored as a leading authority in the field of Jingdezhen ceramic art.

In 1952, he entered Jingdezhen art cooperative, then transferred to Jingdezhen craft society two years later, and then entered the ceramic industry science research institute of the Ministry of light industry to engage in ceramic art creation and research. Wang Xiliang was awarded "ceramic artist" by Jingdezhen Municipal People's Government in 1959; In 1979, he was awarded the title of "master of Chinese arts and crafts" by the Ministry of light industry, and was the first person in Jingdezhen to win this honor. He was awarded the title of senior craft artist in 1987 and enjoyed the "special government allowance" issued by the State Council in 1992. He is a member of China Artists Association and President of Jingdezhen painting and Calligraphy Academy. He has successively served as chairman of Jingdezhen Artists Association, member of the fourth and fifth sessions of Jingdezhen CPPCC and standing member of the sixth session. Honorary curator of China Ceramic Art Museum and honorary curator of Changnan painting and Calligraphy Academy.

When Wang Xiliang was 13 years old, he studied arts with his uncle Wang Dafan. Wang Dafan is one of the eight friends of Zhushan mountain. Wang Dafan's pastel figure painting is the first and has a great influence in Jingdezhen. In 1915, Wang Dafan's work "rank, wealth and long life" won the gold award of Panama International Arts and crafts Expo. Wang Xiliang said, "when I was 14 years old, I imitated my uncle's painting ' pretty girl Xi Shi is washing yarn ' on the pen holder. This pen holder sold for 2 yuan, and I was very excited. My uncle taught me carefully when he saw that I had talent. The first two porcelain paintings I taught were 'rise up upon hearing the crow of a rooster and practise with the sword' and 'Tao Kan Be diligent and self-motivated because you are determined to make contributions'" . In the mid-1950s, Wang Dafan and Liu yucen, two living "eight friends of Zhushan", Wang Bu, known as the "king of blue and white", and Xu Tianmei, Xiong Menglin and Zhang Jian, predecessors of Jingdezhen porcelain painting, were in the Ceramic Research Institute at that time. Wang Xiliang often stayed with them and benefited a lot. His ink colored bottle "the picture of happiness in the East Mountain" is his masterpiece. Vigorous pine trees, elegant characters, and even the elegant pleats of the characters have fresh texture and mixed charm.

Later, influenced by Professor Mei Jianying of the Central Academy of Arts and crafts, Wang Xiliang paid attention to sketch from life and made great progress in his painting style. On the way of sketching, he sometimes met Lin Fengmian and other experts, and Wang Xiliang lost no time to consult and compete. The most unforgettable one was that he saw Lin Fengmian draw "Wu Song kills sister-in-law Pan Jinlian" on two porcelain plates. One is Wu Song raising his knife and the other is Pan Jinlian kneeling. Lin Fengmian used a few strokes to hook out Pan Jinlian's clothes and skirt, and the coquettish and poor image of Pan Jinlian jumped out. Wang Xiliang said, "the charm of that pen will be unforgettable to me all my life." I immediately understood the reason why Wang Xiliang's painting changed from complex to simple.

However, approaching success means that the life of art is stagnant. He was confused in dissatisfaction and thought of change in confusion. At this time, Professor Mei Jianying of the Central Academy of Arts and crafts came to Jingdezhen to give lectures, which brought him a fresh wind and gave him a lot of artistic enlightenment.

In his middle-aged reform, he began with the basis of painting, practiced sketch, sketching, went deep into life, learned from nature and learned from others. Set foot in the countryside of Jingdezhen, traveled far to the famous mountains and rivers of the motherland, collected rich first-hand paintings, broadened vision, broadened ideas, enriched the source of creation, and constantly launched new works.

In more than 50 years of ceramic art career, Wang Xiliang is best at landscape and figure painting. His works have momentum in the eyes of his works and meaning in the view of his small works. Because he is good at painting Chinese paintings, he deliberately rubs Chinese paintings into ceramic works and emphasizes the formal beauty of charm and white when black.
