Sunday, May 01, 2016 2 UCLA astronomers have key roles in development of world’s largest array of gamma-ray telescopes UCLA astronomers are playing a prominent role in the research Stuart Wolpert | July 27, 2015 Daniel Lopez/IAC A prospective site in La Palma, Spain, for the Cherenkov Telescope Array. The location is said to be ideal for year-round observation. ​UCLA astronomy professors Rene Ong and Vladimir Vassiliev are playing important roles in an international initiative to build the world’s largest and most sensitive high-energy gamma-ray observatory, the Cherenkov Telescope Array. The array would consist of two large groups of telescopes located on separate continents. Ong will help develop the science plan for the two prospective sites. His own research focuses on the astrophysics
