Gilman's Inaugural Address Daniel Coit Gilman was inaugurated as the first president of Johns Hopkins University on Feb. 22, 1876, in the Academy of Music at Howard and Centre streets in Baltimore. The governor of Maryland, the mayor of Baltimore, and representatives of a number of colleges and universities were among the distinguished guests. The significance of the occasion was clearly stated by Reverdy Johnston Jr., chairman of the executive committee of the new university's Board of Trustees: "We may say that the university’s birth takes place today, and I do not think it mere sentiment should we dwell with interest upon its concurrence with the centennial year of our national birth, and the birthday of him who led the nation from the throes of battle to maturity and peace." Gilman, 45
