Cornell History: Bound for Brazil June 01, 1870 “The true way to teach geology and natural history is not simply to lecture to the student or to drill him with a text book. ... He must go into the field and collect and observe. In the laboratory he must patiently study the raw material he has gathered together, working to a large degree independent of books. ... Such a method of study gives training, and requires as patient and severe work as the study of mathematics or the languages.” Professor C. Fred Hartt, describing a student expedition to Brazil, in The Cornell Era.
