His dreams of a great university were not fully achieved during his lifetime. At the time of his death, the fledgling Cornell University was having significant financial difficulties, compounded by scathing attacks on the school and its founder for their "godlessness” and radical ways. The university and Ithaca “were plunged in mourning,” writes Cornell Historian Morris Bishop.
