Cornell History: Lincoln Hall named for Abe June 19, 1889 A newly constructed building is named Lincoln Hall in honor of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. He had signed the Morrill Act that facilitated Cornell’s founding. With a $72,603 price tag, the building replaced a wooden barrack that was so cold students and faculty often wore overcoats and gloves inside and watercolors froze in the drafting room. In 2000, the building was renovated to better provide for the Department of Music.
