Cornell History: Schurman inaugurated November 11, 1892 Jacob Gould Schurman, professor of Christian ethics and moral philosophy, is inaugurated Cornell’s third president. Schurman’s accomplishments included the extensive growth of the university’s facilities and a shift from a privately endowed institution to a combination of state and private funding. The Colleges of Veterinary Medicine, of Agriculture and of Medicine were established during his tenure, and several major academic journals were initiated at Cornell.
