Cornell History: Med school forms May 14, 1898 Cornell trustees establish the Cornell University Medical College in New York City. The college registered 278 students in its opening year. Of them, 26 were women, including Emily Dunning, the great niece of Henry Sage. In 1998 the college was renamed the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Medical College and Graduate School of Medical Sciences of Cornell University in honor of its longtime benefactors. In 2004 the university opened Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar, the first American medical school outside of the U.S.
