Cornell History: Nabokov is born April 23, 1899 Vladimir Nabokov is born. He arrived at Cornell to teach Russian and European literature in 1948 when he was still relatively unknown and stayed for a decade. During this period he wrote “Lolita,” his most famous novel. Among his students at Cornell were novelist Thomas Pynchon '59 and future U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg '54, who later called Nabokov a major influence on her development as a writer.
