Cornell History: Typhoid epidemic January 23, 1903 The first student diagnosed with typhoid is taken to the infirmary, a harbinger of what would become the devastating 1903 epidemic. In total, 230 students were sickened and 26 died. At the epidemic’s end, trustee Andrew Carnegie offered to pay all student medical expenses and funded a campus water filtration plant.
