Cornell History: Let there be light May 29, 1908 Professor William A. Anthony, pioneer of Cornell’s physics department, dies. He was a physics professor from 1872 to1887. While at Cornell, he built the first American gramme dynamo (a direct current generator), which was exhibited at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition of 1876 and used to power electric lighting on campus – the first outdoor electric lights in the country and perhaps in the world.
