Cornell History: Cornellians' Titanic connection April 15, 1912 Two Cornellians die during the sinking of the Titanic. Railroad designer William Hull Botsford, Class of 1909, had been studying architectural technique in Egypt, Turkey and Europe and was on his way home to Orange, N.J., when the ship sank. Edgar Meyer, Class of 1905, had been on a European vacation with his wife and was last seen helping other passengers board lifeboats. Two Cornellians survived. Mechanical engineer Normal Chambers, Class of 1905, later said the loudest noise came from “jangling chains whipping along the side of the ship.” Gilbert Tucker Jr., Class of 1901, like Chambers, escaped on a lifeboat and witnessed the ship sink. “The horror of those sights, those sounds,” Tucker later said, “is something never to b
