Cornell History: Founder of geology department dies June 26, 1915 Theodore Comstock dies. He created Cornell’s first course of study in economic geology. After graduating from Cornell in 1870, he served as the geologist on an U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ expedition to Wyoming and Yellowstone Park in 1873. An assistant professor of geology and paleontology 1875-79, Comstock was a founding member of the Geological Society of America, the scientific research society Sigma Xi, the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and the Cornell chapter of Delta Upsilon.
