Cornell History: Secret women's society February 15, 1918 Der Hexenkreis, a female secret honor society at Cornell, becomes a founding chapter of the Mortar Board National Senior Honor Society. Der Hexenkreis (“the witch’s circle”) is the second-oldest nonacademic honor society on campus, after Sphinx Head. Six women students had formed it in 1892, before it joined Mortar Board, as a female counterpart to Sphinx Head. Chapter pins designed by Tiffany & Co. feature a gold skull with red eyes and “7” on its forehead.
