Cornell History: 50th Commencement comes early May 22, 1918 Cornell celebrates its 50th annual Commencement. Because of World War I, the event was significantly earlier than usual; commencement was usually held in June. Also because of the war, that year university officials eliminated all holidays from the academic calendar except for a shortened winter recess.
