Cornell History: War hero dies March 30, 1919 Edward Tinkham, Class of 1916, dies of spinal meningitis and pneumonia in Italy. He had left college a year early and drove an ambulance in France. For his extraordinary heroism at Verdun, France awarded him the Croix de Guerre. He returned to Cornell to earn his forestry degree and organized an ambulance unit almost entirely of Cornell undergraduates and returned to the war. He was the commander of the unit when it carried the first American flag to the front.
