Cornell History: Boldt Hall dedicated December 13, 1932 Boldt Hall is dedicated on West Campus. The building, the Language House of the Alice Cook House community, is named for trustee George C. Boldt, the famed owner of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in Manhattan. Boldt, along with maître d’hôtel Oscar Tschirky, is credited with popularizing Thousand Island dressing and the Waldorf salad. Both Boldt and Tschirky sent their sons to Cornell. And if you look closely at Boldt Hall, there are three sandstone bricks taken from the original Waldorf-Astoria.
