Cornell History: First use of "ivy" January 01, 1933 The word “ivy” is first used in reference to a group of colleges. It appeared in a New York Times article written by sportswriter Stanley Woodward: “A proportion of our eastern ivy colleges are meeting little fellows another Saturday before plunging into the strife and the turmoil.” The term “Ivy League” first appeared in 1935 to refer to older colleges with strong intercollegiate athletic traditions. The league was officially created in 1954 when the eight presidents signed an athletics agreement.
