Cornell History: “Fifth Down Game” November 16, 1940 The Big Red football team plays the famous “Fifth Down Game” against Dartmouth. Although Cornell was declared the winner, 7-3, review of the game tapes by both teams the next day revealed that the final touchdown occurred on an unfair fifth down. Cornell conceded the victory, ending its monumental streak of 18 victories over two seasons. In 2006, the ESPN College Football Encyclopedia listed Cornell’s sportsmanlike concession as the second greatest moment in the history of college football.
