Cornell History: Jan's dilemma May 15, 1950 Cornell Alumni News reprints a letter to the admissions office from an applicant accepted as a freshman. “Finally, I wish to establish the fact that I am a male and not a female, as all letters addressed to me seem to believe. Why my parents named me Jan I’ll never know, but I’m stuck with it, nevertheless I just want to be sure that you don’t house me in the women’s dormitory!”
