Cornell History: Potato-digging problem solved April 15, 1954 Two agriculture students develop a machine to answer New York’s potato-digging problems. David Call ’54, Ph.D. ’60, and William Tucker ’54 invented a potato combine that dug potatoes and rocks from fields, separated the stones in a fast-moving stream of water, and sacked the potatoes. At the time, the seniors had started in on “the knotty problem of preventing the machine from becoming entangled in the potato vines,” reported the Cornell Alumni News. Call went on to become dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
