Cornell History: Harlem Renaissance writer dies April 30, 1961 April 30, 1961 Jessie Fauset, Class of 1905, dies. Profiled in the book “The 100 Most Notable Cornellians,” Fauset was a prolific novelist during the Harlem Renaissance and served as literary editor of the NAACP magazine, The Crisis, under the direction of W.E.B. Du Bois. She is credited with fostering writers such as Langston Hughes and Jean Toomer. Fauset became the first black woman graduate in Phi Beta Kappa.
