Cornell History: Rumor Control Center tamps crisis April 01, 1969 A Rumor Control Center opens to offer accurate information following the April 1 fire at the Africana Studies and Research Center. The Office of the Ombudsman ran the center through April 24, answering nearly 5,000 phone calls, and re-opened as needed through the spring semester, answering another 1,500-2,000 inquiries. Student volunteers observed campus activities such as meetings and rallies and reported back to the Rumor Control Center, which also gathered information from university staff and the news media; other volunteers answered phone calls and disseminated accurate information. The most calls over the longest period of time concerned the killing of four students at Kent State.
