Cornell History: Soggy books get the deep freeze December 03, 1970 Librarians freeze 1,600 water-logged books to save them from further damage. The books were among 4,200 volumes soaked when a water main burst in the Engineering. A 25-member task force began separating the pages hurriedly, because wet books allowed to dry unattended become as hard as bricks. But when the work went too slowly, 1,600 of the books were placed in cartons and wheeled into a frozen food locker in East Ithaca. The staff thawed them at will.
