Cornell History: Sagan greets aliens March 02, 1972 Pioneer 10 begins a 3,000-light-year voyage, the first spacecraft to travel beyond the solar system. In hope of communicating with extraterrestrials, NASA enlisted Cornell astronomers Frank Drake and Carl Sagan, who designed a pictorial greeting. Sagan’s wife at the time, artist Linda Salzman Sagan, drew the image of a naked man and woman, the spacecraft and a map locating Earth as the origin of the message.
