Cornell History: Union conference January 19, 1973 The first Women’s Trade Union Conference is held in New York City, sponsored by Cornell’s New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations New York metropolitan office. About 600 tradeswomen gathered to discuss the role of women in trade unions and to encourage their cooperation with other women workers as well as with unionists to demand “equal pay, equal rights and equal opportunity.” Participants represented 111 local unions and 48 international unions.
