Cornell History: Archie wins National Book Award April 10, 1973 Poet A.R. Ammons, professor of English, wins the National Book Award for poetry for “Collected Poems: 1951-1972.” He would go on to win another National Book Award in 1993 for “Garbage,” which also won the Library of Congress’ Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry.
