Cornell History: Kammen's Pulitzer May 07, 1973 History professor Michael Kammen wins the Pulitzer Prize for his book “People of Paradox: An Inquiry Concerning the Origins of American Civilization” (1972). In his book, Kammen encouraged Americans to be publicly critical of their institutions, stating that this bottom-up reversal of power was inherent to the legacy of the 1776 revolution.
