Cornell History: Rhodes inaugurated November 10, 1977 Frank H.T. Rhodes is inaugurated as Cornell’s ninth president. Rhodes is an emeritus professor of geological sciences and has published widely in geology, paleontology, evolution, the history of science and education. During his presidency, diversity among students and faculty increased, research funding more than tripled and a capital campaign raised $1.5 billion. When he retired in 1995, he was the longest-serving Ivy League president. He went on to play a significant role in the development of national science policy under several U.S. presidents.
