Cornell History: Andrew Biemiller April 03, 1982 Andrew Biemiller, Class of 1926, dies. One of the “100 Most Notable Cornellians,” he was a powerful advocate for progressive reform. Biemiller was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly and became the only minor party state legislature speaker in the 20th century. He joined Congress in 1944 and later became the AFL-CIO’s chief lobbyist. A champion of civil rights, he played a role in nearly every piece of social and economic legislation of the postwar era.
