Cornell History: Low touches down January 20, 1990 Astronaut G. David Low ’80 returns to Earth after his first spaceflight aboard the space shuttle Columbia. Among the mementos Low carried into space were Ezra Cornell’s wedding socks, 125 tiny silicon chips – one for each year of Cornell’s existence at its 125th anniversary that year – bearing a microscopic replica of the university’s crest manufactured by Cornell’s National Nanofabrication Facility and a circuit board that was to be installed as a working component of a supercomputer on campus. The mission launched Jan. 9, 1990.
