Cornell History: Hacker convicted January 23, 1990 Robert T. Morris Jr. is convicted on a felony charge for releasing a computer program that overwhelmed computers nationwide in November 1988. A graduate student when he released his computer worm, he was the first person tried under the 1986 federal computer fraud and abuse law.
