Cornell History: New moons April 30, 1998 Cornell astronomers Philip Nicholson and Joseph Burns and colleagues announce they have discovered two moons of the planet Uranus. They named the moons Caliban and Sycorax, both characters in Shakespeare’s play ”The Tempest.” At the time Caliban and Sycorax were the faintest planetary moons imaged by ground-based telescopes, and their discovery brought the total of Uranus’ known moons to 15.
