Cornell History: Medical college named for Weills April 30, 1998 Cornell names its medical college in honor of its longtime supporters Joan and Sanford I. Weill ’55. Their $100 million gift supported the college’s strategic plan to strengthen research capacity in three areas: structural biology, genetic medicine and neuroscience. At the time it was the largest single gift ever given to the university. The college is now known as the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Medical College and Graduate School of Medical Sciences of Cornell University.
