Cornell History: No nukes May 25, 2001 Cornell’s trustees decide to shut down the small nuclear reactor in the Ward Center for Nuclear Sciences due to concerns about radioactivity and lack of use. The reactor was switched on in 1962 in what was then the Ward Laboratory, which focused on the burgeoning field of nuclear engineering. In 1997, Ward became an interdisciplinary center.
