Originally a Charles River salt marsh, by the middle of the 19th century, it was a bustling industrial center that housed distilleries, factories, and the well-known Kendall Boiler and Tank Company, hence its name. After World War II, most businesses had shut down or moved, leaving much of the section deserted, except for MIT, which had moved to Cambridge in 1916. With President John F.
